Honest Fiverr Review: Is Fiverr Legit Or A Scam?

If you ever outsourced or tried to find a freelancer to complete a project for you, you probably have heard of Fiverr.com. Fiverr is a legitimate website that makes buying and selling web based services easy and affordable. The website is available globally so there is a good chance the freelancer you hire may not be a native English speaker.

If you currently don’t have a website or if you have ever thought about running your own online business I highly recommend you checkout Shopify. To learn more about starting your own business you can read my full blog here on how to pick the right product and how to get started today!

If you are like me and search the web for reviews, you might find some bad reviews about Fiverr online. And yes, some people have been burned by a seller on Fiverr in the past but you need to know how to audit them before you waste your money. Also keep in mind most tasks are for $5 so you get what you pay for, but if used properly you can find some real talent on the site.

What is Fiverr?

Fiverr is a global freelance marketplace for digital services, starting at $5 per “gig”, which is how it got its name. The company was founded by Shai Wininger & Micha Kaufman on February 1st, 2010. Their headquarters is located in Tel Aviv, Israel, but most of their users are from the United States. In just 8 short years Fiverr has become one of the most trusted websites on Google and has over 1 million monthly visits.

Is Fiverr Safe To Use?

In my opinion Fiverr is a safe website to use. They are in the top 2,000 of all the websites in the world, and have a huge user base. Most scams would not have this many users and this high of a website ranking. Now just because Fiverr as a whole isn’t a scam, you should be cautious with whom you chose to work with because yes there are individual scammers. With any freelance marketplace you have to be careful with who you work with and what services you outsource.

Fiverr Scam

As mentioned before there are scammers on Fiverr you need to look out for. An easy way to avoid a possible scam is to not outsource certain tasks. Although it sounds appealing that someone will post your website on a Facebook page that has 100,000 likes or they will build 100 backlinks to your website for only $5, don’t believe the hype. I would be very careful with hiring someone to build backlinks to your website or to post your website on social media accounts.

Unfortunately you get what you pay for, and you can do more harm than good. Chances are you will get a lot of low quality traffic and your website can get penalized by Google if they are building spammy backlinks. Another way to easy identify a potentially scammer is if they have all positive reviews and 0 negative/moderate reviews. You’ll want to see a lot of positive reviews but make sure you see a few complaints. Realistically even the best services in any market will have some dissatisfied customers, because let’s face it people like to complain and might have expected different results. Either way, you should be very suspicious of people with 0 negative reviews.

Picking A Legit Seller On Fiverr

Now that I might have scared you from using Fiverr, here is how to avoid the scammers and get quality work done for cheap. My first recommendation is to only use Fiverr for content writing, graphic designs such as logos or other images, creating music or voice-overs, or to create videos. Fiverr is great when it comes to content creation and with thousands of people to choose from you can get someone to write content for you blog, website, or dropshipping business. In my opinion so of the other services might be a gamble.

After you enter the task you are looking to hire a freelancer use the filters on the left side navigator to choice the “seller level” to be safe I use Level Two and Top Rated Seller. Again be careful if you choice someone with an average of 5 stars. I would encourage you to choose someone with an average review of 4.5–4.9. This means they have had some negative feedback. You should also read what other people are saying about their work to make sure they aren’t fake reviews and that they are legit buyers.

Another quick audit you should do is to make sure the seller’s Fiverr profile is grammatically correct, this is even more important if you want to hire a freelance for content writing. Some other things you should look for before hiring someone on Fiverr is to look at their response time, you want to make sure they respond in a timely manner. I would also recommend to look at how many orders they have completed and to make sure they deliver those orders on time. Nothing is worse than hiring someone who can’t deliver as promised.

Fiverr Complaints

Now that you know all the good stuff about Fiverr and how to overcome the potential scammers, here are a few things people complain about. Some people claim that the website is too crowded. But the concept is great for $5 you can hire someone to do a job for you, that sounds amazing. Anyone can create a free profile, so yes it can get a little crowded and if you are a new seller you may never get found unfortunately. With so many people offering their services sometimes quality is not guaranteed, Fiverr doesn’t screen any of its users so some people may under deliver. However, if you use the tips I provided above on how to find a quality seller you shouldn’t have anything to worry about.

Conclusion

In my opinion Fiverr is a legit website and is not a scam. There are many honest freelancers just looking to make a decent living. When using Fiverr, remember the saying “you get what you pay for.” Keep in mind that getting a job done for $5 is a lot cheaper than hiring a freelancer who charges hourly or hiring a full time employee.

If you should have a problem with a seller, Fiverr’s customer service is there to help in most cases they will be able to refund your money. The refund is paid back in credit, but if you properly review a seller’s profile you shouldn’t have any problems. If you use or used Fiverr comment below your experience and let others know if they are legit or a scam.
